The Sub Entry Nozzle / Shroud (SEN / SES / TCM-SES) is an iso-statically pressed refractory tube used to control the flow of molten steel from the tundish to the mould. Its primary function is to prevent re-oxidation of steel during transfer. The design of SEN / SES plays a critical role in the casting process by modulating steel flow and influencing the thermal characteristics inside the mould.

Features

  • Optimised Design: Bore geometry and port shape are customised to regulate flow dynamics within the mould. Tailor-made designs are available for bloom, billet, and slab casters, depending on casting parameters.
  • Choice of Material: A wide range of mixes are available based on steel composition and casting conditions, ensuring high thermal shock resistance and erosion durability.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Various glaze compositions are offered to suit different preheating and casting conditions.
  • Inner Special Liner: Special SEN designs with liners help minimise clogging and carbon pick-up in steel.
  • Cold Start SES: A specially engineered refractory component with very high thermal shock resistance, designed for emergency or initial casting operations.

Thermal Insulation

  • Materials such as bio-soluble ceramic fibre or fibre-free insulating coatings are used in SEN and SES for effective insulation

Benefits

  • Prevents re-oxidation and inclusion entrapment, resulting in cleaner steel
  • Improves flow dynamics for smooth casting operations
  • Enhances casting duration with special slag zone mixes

Application

  • Flow Control in Continuous Casting: Regulates the transfer of molten steel from tundish to mould.
