IFGL Refractories

Monoblock Stopper

Monoblock Stopper (MBS) is an isostatically pressed refractory which is a critical element in the Continuous Casting of Steel where it is used to control the flow of steel from the “Tundish to Mould”.

The stopper nose design helps to achieve desired metallurgical needs by controlling mould level fluctuation, preventing vortex formation and reduce inclusions during steel casting.

Design and quality of Monoblock Stoppers have to be customized depending on the operational requirement of the steel plant. Monoblock Stoppers for high sequence casting have projected slag zone and special mix reinforcement for slag zone area.

Argon purging arrangement in MBS help to prevent air ingress and re-oxidation of steel and formation of clogging deposits.

Stopper Nose Design

Monoblock Stopper nose is a crucial area which is subjected to maximum erosion & corrosion. Multi radial and special profile MBS nose designs together with different mix quality, coatings and ceramic glazes help to achieve high casting performance.

Gas Purging Arrangement

Inert gas purging in stoppers are common to prevent alumina build up and clogging. The gas inlet has to be made air-tight to prevent air aspiration, which otherwise will degrade the steel quality.

Sepcial Slag Zone Reinforcement

In order to resist the corrosive action of tundish slag, sometimes the stoppers are provided with extra reinforcement in the slag zone area.

Monoblock Stopper Fixing

The upward & downward movement of the monoblock stopper is controlled by a rod which is fixed to it in different ways. In some cases this fixing is to be air tight.

MBS is fitted to the tundish stopper control mechanism by a rod which is fixed to the MBS body with a metallic or ceramic insert. The connection is made air tight by use of special gaskets which are under compression at any given temperature.
